It became apparent within the first few lessons over forty years ago that leaning martial arts was going to be a long journey, what I never envisaged as a youngster was that it would take the rest of my life to try to master some of the arts that I have studied.
I sometimes reflect back over the years and ask myself could I have found an easier route to my martial studies that would have cut down on all the years of studying, training and extreme hard work. Well the truthful answer is No!
The hard work, the endless hours of training are what drives me forward because that’s what martial arts is all about. Each day for me is another spectacular challenge and as each day unfolds, I find that I have learned just a little more and sometimes forgotten a little something too, so then I go back to the basics.
Now at the “young age” of fifty seven the challenge is more physical than mental. I have to say that mentally I feel like a very young man but when I look in the mirror I see a middle aged man looking back at me. I definitely don’t have to look in the mirror to know that each day my body and certain joints are in a rebellion against the physical regime that I put it through.
And when I consider all that I have put my body through, training seven days a week for over forty years plus, you know, I am really pleased with the results. I can still do almost everything that I could do when I was thirty, now isn’t that something to boast about! Its not that I haven’t had any problems, I’ve had, one knee operation, quite a few back operations, a whole load of broken bones, pulled and strained muscles and a couple of serious illness’s that I have had to overcome, but I am still here, alive and still “kicking”.
Each one incident in its own right would have ended most people’s martial arts career and I have met thousands and thousands of people over the years that have had an injury or through wear and tear have had some joint problems and this has been there excuse to completely retire from martial arts and from any other form of physical activity for the rest of there lives and most are in there late twenties early thirties.
So what is the solution to longevity in martial arts? Well the first must be a (PMA) positive mental attitude; this alone will help you defeat all the aches and pains that you may have to endure throughout your martial arts career. What you have to remember is that all martial arts have some physical contact and it is inevitable that you are going to get the occasional bump or bang.
(PMA) will also help you overcome the trials and tribulations that come with trying to master certain techniques and the arts themselves. Life is simple really, think positive thoughts and you will be able to overcome anything, think negative thoughts and you will achieve nothing except for misery and a short career in martial arts.
Starting in a bad club is a sure way to end your martial studies quickly so spend the time looking for a good club. Even with the best attitude in the world you can easily be put off by bad instruction and even a style that does not meet your individual requirements, so take your time, read about various martial arts, visits clubs and ask if you can view some of the training. Always seek out the best instructor possible and when you find one stick with him! Hopefully, you are now on your way to a happy and long career in martial arts.
In my first book named, “A Breath of Fresh, Kempo Karate, Novice to Intermediate” I try to cover the pros and cons of looking for a good club, so it might be worth you getting a copy, especially if you are just starting out in the martial arts or you think you on the wrong martial arts track.
The books objective is not only to guide you as to what to look out for in a good club, it will also help you identify the basic karate techniques with easy to follow photo graphic illustrations and give you an overall insight into what to expect from the first few years of training.
Safe training is a priority in my martial life and I have made several references to this in my book, but as I writing about martial longevity, I cannot leave out the following. I do feel that most martial arts clubs are quite negligent when it come to the overall welfare of there students. I have seen over the years, lots of completely unnecessary injures, that from the onset have been caused by students been encouraged to snap kick into thin air! This can only damage knee joints! I will only let my students kick and punch at good quality pads that are designed to absorb impact. This stops the kicking leg from over extending and minimizes any injury.
Another easy way to save joint problems is to train on a good quality mat that is purpose made for martial arts. Look in my book and you will see that I train on such a mat. This however is not the general rule in most kick and punch styles, I have heard boasts that it is tough to train on a floor! What a load of rubbish! The only thing this will do is give you bad ankles, knees and hip joints.
The next solution is just good old common sense, but sadly this seem to be lacking in martial arts when it comes to basic training. You need to warm up properly before each session, the correct warm up will save you lots of misery, lost training time and unnecessary injuries, so never neglect a warm up and when you finish a training session always cool down!
If you do happen to get an injury, then the important thing is to treat it straight away. The first aid guidelines I.C.E which stand for Ice, Compression and Elevation are essential for minor muscular injuries and also minor joint injuries. Anything more serious is a trip to the local A.E. I know all the first aid people are now getting your pens to paper because you think that I have missed out another letter from I.C.E with the letter “R” which stands for “Rest” but I am not a total advocate of complete rest after an injury. Some rest may be essential in the first few days if the injury stops you walking around, but most injuries repair themselves a lot quicker with movement and gentle manipulation.
To aid recovery I have tried all kind of medicines, alternative medications, rubs and various awful tasting and smelling concoctions. So here are a few things that I have tried and have had some success with.
For general muscular aches and pains, relief of sore and achy muscles, ease back pain, soothe headaches, clear sinuses, Tiger Balm works well. You can get this in a mild white cream that I personally don’t rate, the one to go for is the stronger version in a red cream, (this is excellent!) apply this sparingly to the aching parts and repeat as necessary. The active ingredients are camphor and menthol; however, the cajuput, clove, cassia, and peppermint oils are what give this ointment its unique scent (strong smell). This item helps increase blood circulation and helps to carry away lactic acid, which is the main cause of sore muscles.
Tiger Balm has a strong odour and will make any clothing that comes into contact with it smell so be careful and be doubly careful not to put it close to your eyes, mouth and need I say this, your private parts. Oh boy, you will know about it in about a millionth of a second!
Arnica tablets are very useful in the early stages of an injury when there is swelling. Arnica can be used prior to and immediately after a demanding workout or event (e.g., a grading or competition) to prevent post-workout soreness. While “weekend warriors” may benefit from arnica, they should not use it routinely in lieu of adequate training and stretching; overuse of arnica can cause it to lose its effectiveness or cause side effects such as pain and soreness.
Do not use arnica for more than seven consecutive days. You should discontinue use once your symptoms have improved.
Devil's claw is a plant native to southern Africa found growing in the Kalahari Desert, Namibia, the island of Madagascar and few other locations. The name devil's claw comes from the herb's unusual fruits, which are covered with numerous small claw-like appendages. The roots, or tubers, of the plant are used in herbal preparations.
Devil's claw has been used as a tonic to relieve arthritis, rheumatism, reduce fever, ease sore muscles, and to reduce cholesterol. Externally, devil's claw has been used as an ointment in connection with sores, boils, and ulcers. It is also used to cleanse the lymph system and to remove toxins from the blood.
Traditionally, devil's claw has been used in Africa in connection with a wide range of conditions. In the western world, it is used mainly for arthritis and related conditions such as tendonitis. In laboratory and human studies, a chemical called harpagoside, one of the active ingredients in devil's claw, has been shown to reduce inflammation which is responsible for irritation, injury, or infection. Inflammation generally results in pain, redness, and swelling in the area of the damage. It can occur within body tissues as well as on the surface of the skin.
Reportedly, devil's claw also has some effectiveness for increasing appetite and for improving digestion. Extracts of devil's claw are thought to reduce blood sugar levels somewhat, and several of the chemicals in devil's claw appear to affect blood pressure, heart rate, hearth rhythm and contraction of the heart. However, no reliable scientific evidence supports the use of devil's claw for diabetes or heart conditions. Always follow the instructions on the label, as a rule the tablets come in 200mg.
Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulfate are substances found naturally in the body. Glucosamine is a form of amino sugar that is believed to play a role in cartilage formation and repair. Chondroitin sulfate is part of a large protein molecule (proteoglycan) that gives cartilage elasticity.
Both glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are sold as dietary or nutritional supplements. They are extracted from animal tissue: glucosamine from crab, lobster or shrimp shells; and chondroitin sulfate from animal cartilage, such as tracheas or shark cartilage.
Past studies show that some people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis (OA) taking either glucosamine or chondroitin sulfate reported pain relief at a level similar to that of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin and ibuprofen. Some research indicates that the supplements might also slow cartilage damage in people with OA. Definitive results about the effects of these supplements are expected from an in-depth clinical study currently being conducted by the National Institutes of Health.
Finally, cod liver oil, fish oil and Omega 3. In my opinion, other than drinking more water and eating more fresh fruit and vegetables, these are the most important additions to the diet to fight and prevent disease and live longer.

To conclude this article, eat a good balanced diet, don’t drink to much alcohol or avoid it completely and think about you overall body weight, even with the best supplements and training care in the world, if you carry to much body weight this can be extremely harmful to your joints, as your joints are continually under pressure, twenty fours a day, seven days a week. Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies. Don't freeze your plastic Bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.
Recently, Edward Fujimoto , Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital ,Was on a TV program to explain this health hazard.He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.
He said that we should not be heating our food in the Microwave using plastic containers..This especially applies to foods that contain fat.
He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin Into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body...Instead, he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware, Pyrex or ceramic Containers for heating food... You get the same results, only without the dioxin.
So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc.,Should be removed from the container and heated in something else.
Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper.It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.
He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away From the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons...

In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick. She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.
By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick. She just knew she was dying. She put her house, bank accounts, life insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of.
She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22 nod.
On March 19 I called her to ask how her most recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS.
I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment.
I e-mailed her the article my friend, a lawyer, had sent.
My sister called me within 32 hours after our phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but she sure felt a lot better. She told me she was going to her doctor with this article and would call me when she got home.
Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial sweeteners of any kind.
In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the Aspartame in the diet soda...and literally dying a slow and miserable death.
When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a complete recovery.

I have spent several days lecturing at the WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL CONFERENCE on 'ASPARTAME,' marketed as 'NutraSweet,' 'Equal,' and 'Spoonful.'
In the keynote address by the EPA, it was announced that in the United States in 2001 there is an epidemic of multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. It was difficult to determine exactly what toxin was causing this to be rampant.
I stood up and said that I was there to lecture on exactly that subject.
I will explain why Aspartame is so dangerous: When the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, the wood alcohol in ASPARTAME converts to formaldehyde and then to formic acid, which in turn causes metabolic acidosis. Formic acid is the poison found in the sting of fire ants. The methanol toxicity mimics, among other conditions, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus. Many people were being diagnosed in error. Although multiple sclerosis is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity is!
Systemic lupus has become almost as rampant as multiple sclerosis, especially with Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi drinkers. The victim usually does not know that the Aspartame is the culprit. He or she continues its use; irritating the lupus to such a degree that it may become a life-threatening condition.
We have seen patients with systemic lupus become asymptotic, once taken off diet sodas.
In cases of those diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, most of the symptoms disappear. We've seen many cases where vision loss returned and hearing loss improved markedly.
This also applies to cases of tinnitus and fibromyalgia.
During a lecture, I said, 'If you are using ASPARTAME (NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc) and you suffer from fibromyalgia symptoms, spasms, shooting, pains, numbness in your legs, cramps, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision, or memory loss you probably have ASPARTAME poisoning!'
People were jumping up during the lecture saying, 'I have some of these symptoms. Is it reversible?'
Yes! Yes! Yes! STOP drinking diet sodas and be alert for Aspartame on food labels! Many products are fortified with it! This is a serious problem.
Dr. Esparto (one of my speakers) remarked that so many people seem to be symptomatic for MS and during his recent visit to a hospice, a nurse stated that six of her friends, who were heavy Diet Coke addicts, had all been diagnosed with MS. This is beyond coincidence!
Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered, multiple SODIUM (salt) and ASPARTAME containing product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates. It is far more likely to make you GAIN weight!
These products also contain formaldehyde, which stores in the fat cells, particularly in the hips and thighs. Formaldehyde is an absolute toxin andis used primarily to preserve 'tissue specimens.' Many products we use every day contain this chemical but we SHOULD NOT store it IN our body!
Dr. H. J. Roberts stated in his lectures that once free of the 'diet products' and with no significant increase in exercise; his patients lost an average of 19 pounds over a trial period.
Aspartame is especially dangerous for diabetics.
We found that some physicians, who believed that they had a patient with retinopathy, in fact, had symptoms caused by Aspartame.
The Aspartame drives the bloodsugar out of control. Thus diabetics may suffer acute memory loss due to the fact that aspartic acid and phenylalanine are NEUROTOXIC when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good balance.
Treating diabetes is all about BALANCE. Especially with diabetics, the Aspartame passes the blood/brain barrier and it then deteriorates the neurons of the brain; causing various levels of brain damage, seizures, depression, manic depression, panic attacks, uncontrollable anger and rage.
Consumption of Aspartame causes these same symptoms in non-diabetics as well.
Documentation and observation also reveal that thousands of children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in their behavior when these chemicals have been removed from their diet. So called 'behavior modification prescription drugs' (Ritalin and others) are no longer needed. Truth be told, they were never NEEDED in the first place! Most of these children were being 'poisoned' on a daily basis with the very foods that were 'better for them than sugar.'
It is also suspected that the Aspartame in thousands of pallets of diet Coke and diet Pepsi consumed by men and women fighting in the Gulf War, may be partially to blame for the well-known Gulf War Syndrome.
Dr. Roberts warns that it can cause birth defects, i.e . mental retardation, if taken at the time of conception and during early pregnancy.
Children are especially at risk for neurological disorders and should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners. There are many different case histories to relate of children suffering grand mal seizures and other neurological disturbances talking about a plague of neurological diseases directly caused by the use of this deadly poison.'
Herein lies the problem:
There were Congressional Hearings when Aspartame was included 100 different products and strong objection was made concerning its use. Since this initial hearing, there have been two subsequent hearings, and still nothing has been done. The drug and chemical lobbies have very deep pockets.
Sadly, MONSANTO'S patent on Aspartame has EXPIRED!
There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical and there will be thousands more introduced. Everybody wants a 'piece of the Aspartame pie.' I assure you that MONSANTO, the creator of Aspartame, knows how deadly it is.
And isn't it ironic that MONSANTO funds, among others, the American Diabetes Association, the American Dietetic Association and the Conference of the American College of Physicians?
This has been recently exposed in the New York Times.
These [organizations] cannot criticize any additives or convey their link to MONSANTO because they take money from the food industry and are required to endorse their products.
Senator Howard Metzenbaum wrote and presented a bill that would require label warnings on products containing Aspartame, especially regarding pregnant women, children and infants. The bill would also institute independent studies on the known dangers and the problems existing in the general population regarding seizures, changes in brain chemistry, neurological changes and behavioral symptoms.
The bill was killed.
It is known that the powerful drug and chemical lobbies are responsible for this, letting loose the hounds of disease and death on an unsuspecting and uninformed public. Well, you're Informed now! YOU HAVE A RIGHT TO KNOW!

During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone
that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ....she said she had
just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared
a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken
to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke
at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps
Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die.... they end up in a helpless,
hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours
he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said
the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting
the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.

the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe
brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke .
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple

to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)

R *Ask him or
her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with
ANY ONE of these tasks,

New Sign of a Stroke
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out
their tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart
attack, without help,the person whose heart is beating
improperly and who begins to feel faint, has only
about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness.
However,these victims can help themselves by coughing
repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should
be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep
and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep
inside the chest.
A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two
seconds without let-up until help arrives, or until
the heart is felt to be beating normally again.
Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing
movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood
circulating. The squeezing pressure on the heart also
helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart
attack victims can get to a hospital. Tell as many
